Saraswati, the Goddess of Knowledge, is believed to be the daughter of Lord Shiva & Maa Durga and is one of the Hindu deities. She is known for bestowing the power of learning in the field of literature, arts, music to her followers, which is the knowledge & intelligence aspect of Lord Brahma. Saraswati, commonly called Vagdevi or Shatarupa, is known to be the mother of all Vedas. She is portrayed as a woman in a white saree, sitting on a lotus flower and holding a book in one hand, a rosary of crystals in the other hand, Veena in her third hand and a pot of sacred water in fourth hand. She has white swans around. Her devotees celebrate her birthday every year on Basant Panchami.

   What does saraswati symbolize:

Every Hindu deity has some symbolism, and likewise, Saraswati has it. She is clad in a white saree which represents knowledge and purity. Her four arms have four elements in her hands, which depict the various aspects of humans i.e. learning mind, intelligence, alertness and ego. They represent as under:

  • Vedas, in her hand, represent knowledge & intelligence.
  • The musical instrument Veena, on the other hand, represents the source of all happiness.
  • Stringed beads in her third hand represent concentration & discipline.
  • A pot of sacred water in her fourth hand represents creative and purifying abilities
  • In addition to the above, the Lotus she sits on represents that one can remain untouched by the negativities around; the swan around her represents beauty and the ability to differentiate right and wrong. Also, the four arms of Saraswati reflect the four Vedas of Hinduism i.e. Rigveda, Atharvaveda, Samveda and Yajurveda.

How to offer prayers to goddess saraswati:

To seek the blessings of Sarasvati, the Vedas have specified the puja procedure to be followed. The puja needs to be undertaken in the morning hours. First of all, Lord Ganesha should be prayed for an undisturbed puja. Then, the Saraswati statue should be bathed with panchamrit (Ganga water, ghee, curd, honey and milk), followed by clean water. The Saraswati Murti should be then put up on a raised platform with a white cloth beneath it. A Kalash with water, five mango leaves and a coconut on it should be placed alongside. Furthermore, adding yellow and white flowers is considered auspicious; one should always add them on. A tilak of Sandalwood & saffron should be made on the forehead of the Saraswati idol. Boondi, Fruits and Khichuri are offered to the deity. Then after chanting Saraswati’s mantra, one should seek forgiveness for any mistake committed during the poojan.
